Over 3,000 citizens have contacted the Harrison County Free Spay/Neuter Program to date seeking assistance with stray dogs and cats.  The majority of respondents to the county's publicized spay/neuter services are in possession of animals which they did not acquire by choice.  The unknown/unowned animals were found near their homes, approached their homes seeking food, or were found elsewhere and exhibited behavior considered to be consistent with animal abandonment characteristics.

As respondents to the program are not required to meet criteria, such as establishing low- or fixed-income status, the information provided regarding the animals in their possession is considered to be factual.

A PUBLIC SERVICE    Because until February, 2005, Harrison County did not provide animal shelter and animal control services, citizens accessing the Free Spay/Neuter Program are actually providing a public service to the county by sheltering abandoned and homeless animals.  At their own expense they have fed and cared for these animals, which has kept populations of dogs and cats from roaming throughout the county, including downtown Corydon.  The Spay/Neuter Program is beneficial to all citizens.

RESIDENCY VERIFICATION IS REQUIRED    Those Harrison Countians accessing the program must provide proof of residence.
