HOT DOGS!

Always provide extra shade for chained dogs.  A dog house in the sun can be like an oven turned above 100 degrees.  Chained animals cannot escape the brutal heat of the summer sun.  Dog houses should be located under a shade tree, or some other form of secondary shade should be in place.

Plenty of cool water throughout the day is also a necessity.

Daily exercise, such as a walk during the coolest part of the day, is also important to keep chained dogs from becoming bored and lonely.  Dogs, especially older animals who are not used to regular exercise, should not be forced to walk long distances or run during hot weather.  Do not tie dogs to bicycles and run them alongside!  This can be a killer!

FOOD AND WATER

Water is essential for all animals all the time.  During hot weather provide cool water several times a day.  Keep water in a shaded area and scrub out the water bowls or buckets every day.  In cold weather water will freeze and must be replenished several times a day.  Freeze-proof buckets that plug into electrical outlets are also available to keep pet's water from freezing.

To prevent water buckets and bowls from tipping over you can:  1)  Secure the bowl or bucket inside a milk crate or other stable, heavy container; or 2)  Dig a shallow hole and place the bucket inside.

Provide extra food during winter for outdoor animals.  Warm food will help an animal endure cold temperatures.  Recommended recipes which can be prepared, stored, and heated as needed are listed in the book Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard Pitcairn, DVM.

IF PROBLEMS OCCUR

An animal's health care or a guardian's ability to properly care for an animal are issues that can often be resolved.  Before deciding it's no longer possible to care for your pet, contact your local animal protection agency for assistance.  Never give your animal away to a stranger without visiting the home where the animal will live and asking for references.
