QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

WHAT IS THE HARRISON COUNTY SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM?

The Harrison County Spay/Neuter Program is a Harrison County Government program which began in 2001 when our Commissioners and County Council allocated $10,000 to provide free dog and cat sterilizations for Harrison County Residents.  This program is unprecedented in Kentucky and Indiana, and is only one of four or five in the entire US.  The spay/neuter program has changed through the years -- currently vouchers for $20 to $35 off spay/neuter surgeries are offered.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Harrison County residents only.  Proof of residency and two references must be provided.

WHO DOES THE SURGERIES?

Vouchers can be used at the veterinarian of your choice.  The amount of the voucher is taken off the total spay or neuter bill.

HOW DO I ORDER A VOUCHER?

Call (812) 969-2615 and listen to the recording.  Provide your name, mailing address, and telephone number.  Clearly repeat your phone number a second time and let us know whether you have a dog or cat, whether the animal is a male or female, the approximate size of the dog (such as beagle-size, German shepherd-size, Great Dane-size, etc. ).  A voucher will be sent to you within one week.

CAN I SCHEDULE PREGNANT ANIMALS?

Yes.  We will work to get the animal spayed as soon as possible.

HOW MANY ANIMALS CAN I SCHEDULE?

Let us know how many animals you have, and a volunteer will contact you to discuss your options.

HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER TO HELP?

HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE PROGRAM?

Write editorials to the Corydon Democrat and Courier-Journal newspapers -- this helps educate the public locally and elsewhere.  Let your elected officials know how you feel about the Spay/Neuter Program.  Call us for literature which you can share and post.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER ANIMAL PROBLEMS?

We will work to help you regardless of the problem.  You can also contact Bruce LaHue, the county's Animal Control Officer, at (812) 738-8163.
